Assam lost 16 rhinos so far in 2013

A 15 days old Rhino calf was successfully rescued Thursday in Manas National Park, Assam.

“It was a challenge getting hold of the calf as it was very scared, but thankfully it is fine and doing well now”, said Mr. Deba Dutta, Senior Project Officer, WWF-India and one of the members of the rescue team.

The calf was caught about 3 km south of the area where its mother had been killed by poachers April 2 being the 16th rhino to be killed this year in the state.

High demand of rhino horns in East Asian countries has increased killing of rhinos.

It (calf) was then brought to the elephant training centre in the Bansbari range of the Park. The calf was administered oral re-hydration and is currently under observation of the veterinarians.

The calf will be transferred to boma, a special fenced enclosure within a week where it will be raised with the help of a rescue and a rehabilitation expert.

The rescue operation involved thirty frontline and senior staff of Assam Forest Department, veterinarians, twenty local villagers and members of WWF-India’s rhino monitoring team divided into three elephant borne teams.
